BAKing WORKSHOPS

Baking classes are held on request at your home or chosen location. These classes are held on request, via booking. Please make sure you have a suitable oven and working space. All ingredients and equipment will be provided. Baking workshops are also held as events in various locations around Johannesburg. 

Introduction to African plant based baking: millet, sorghum and cassava

This class takes place in Observatory, Johannesburg from 9am on Saturday 21 September 2024. Limited spaces available.

Learn how to make delicious gluten free and dairy free bakes through this class. The class will cover the basics of plant based baking and help you gain confidence in the kitchen, including egg replacements, gluten free baking tips and how to maximise the use of African grains and vegetables. This one-on-one class will help you grasp the basics of dairy-free baking and give you the confidence you need to further your creative expression. You will make a rooibos and raisin cake and get to take it home after the class.

Vubela: Fementing sorghum and flat bread

Join us for this 2 day class from 5-6 October 2024, Observatory Johannesburg

 

Discover the joy of fermentation in this hands on class to help you unleash your creativity and connection with the sorghum grain. Learn how to make your make your own sorghum sourdough starter, how to take care of it, and how to dry it for preservation. The 2 day class will also show you how to make your own gluten free sourdough loaf overnight and how to make flatbreads from the whole sorghum grain.  All materials are provided, along with refreshments for the class duration. Each person gets to take their freshly made breads home as well as a sorghum starter to continue the journey.

The Art of tart

This class takes place in Observatory, Johannesburg from 9am on Saturday 14 October 2024. Limited spaces available.

 

Learn how to make delicious gluten free and dairy free tart base and the custard to go along with it. This tart base that you will learn about and create, is based on millet, which is one of our ancient African grains that are great for baking. The class will show you how to make custard from coconut and how to make a blueberry compote to go along with it. The other tart flavour is chocolate ganache and you will learn how to make a chocolate ganache tart to take home as well.

Discover the joy of cupcake decorating in this hands on class to help you unleash your creativity. Whether at home, for a fun event or team exercise, we are here to share the joy of cake decorating at your party destination! This is a great activity to celebrate a birthday since there will be plenty baked cakes to enjoy. Learn how to use piping nozzles, colour buttercream and diverse piping techniques. This class is R690 for per person and is 3hrs long. We bring the materials, tools and mini cakes to you, along with refreshments for the class duration. Each person gets to take their cake and new skills home. Minimum of 3 people required for booking in Johannesburg only. 

Baking classes are a great way for kids to learn new terminology and work on their maths and motor skills.
